The period to submit an application to the 2010-2011 Sauvé Scholars Program has now ended. We will respond to those who submitted a complete application at the earliest opportunity.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL APPLICANTS AND NOMINATORS:
All the Forms require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view, save and print content. If you don’t have this free software installed on your computer, please click here to download the latest version for PC and Mac (or click here to download previous versions). NOTE TO MAC USERS: The Forms SHOULD NOT be filled out in Preview because even if you can save the information, it will be lost when the document is opened at our end with Acrobat Reader.
Before sending your final documents, please also make sure that once printed, each text box is displaying ALL the content that you entered. Any text that is displayed by scrolling down within a box will be lost in the printed version. If your text does not fit in the box, you may complete the section(s) in an attached document. Please be sure to indicate your name and Personal File Number at the top of each document(s) submitted as part of your application.
You may also consult Adobe’s troubleshooting section for printing problems with Acrobat Reader.
If you are a member of Facebook, you may wish to join the Sauvé Scholars Applicants’ group for information and guidance through the application process.
HOW TO OBTAIN THE APPLICATION FORM
Applicants to the Sauvé Scholars Program must complete the Basic Information (Short) Form. Please ensure that you have filled in all fields, or the process will not continue.
When you have submitted the Short Form you will receive an e-mail message (1) indicating your assigned Personal File Number (PFN) — which you must include on all Application documents and any correspondence with the Sauvé Scholars Program — and (2) with the Application Form (PDF) and the Nomination Form (PDF).
- APPLICATION FORM (see below) must be completed by you, and forwarded to the person who will nominate you to be a Sauvé Scholar;
- NOMINATION FORM - All applicants to the Sauvé Scholars Program must be nominated by someone — not related to you — who knows you in a professional, academic, and/or personal capacity. The Nomination Form is an essential component of the Application package and must be completed by your Nominator. You should not wait until you have completed the Application Form and package, but may forward the Nomination Form immediately to your Nominator. Instructions for completion are included in the Nomination Form, however it is essential that you inform your Nominator of your Personal File Number, as it must also appear on the Nomination Form.
Completed Application packages must be submitted* by the Applicant’s Nominator to the Sauvé Scholars Selection Committee before the deadline of 5PM EST on Monday, 30 November 2009
* See Submission of Applications below for complete instructions
FIRST STAGE — THE APPLICATION PROCESS
COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FORM
Applicants should download the Application Form, fill in all relevant fields and include:
- i. a Personal Statement
- ii. a Project Proposal for the course of action and/or study you plan to undertake as a Sauvé Scholar,
- iii. unofficial academic transcript(s). [click here to see a transcript sample]
All materials may be submitted in English or French.
When you have completed the Application Form, your Personal Statement, Project Proposal and unofficial transcript(s), you will forward the complete package to your Nominator and request him/her to submit the Nomination Form, together with your Application package, to the Sauvé Scholars Program Selection Committee
MAKING THE CASE FOR YOUR CANDIDACY
The Personal Statement and the Project Proposal are required and must be submitted with the Application Form. Please note that the Selection Committee looks for clear, concise and compelling personal statements and project proposals, as Candidates are chosen on the basis of (1) their experience and achievements and (2) what they propose to achieve during the course of the Program.
a) PERSONAL STATEMENT (maximum 500 words)
Please provide a short biographical statement telling the Selection Committee and your potential fellow Scholars something about yourself in order to prove your value as both an asset and contributor to the Program. In outlining your personal history, experience and accomplishments, you should address two key questions: “Why do I want to be a Sauvé Scholar” and “Why should the Selection Committee choose me.”
For your guidance, you may wish to consult profiles of past and current Scholars posted on the Sauvé Scholars website at www.sauvescholars.org/en/scholars
b) PROJECT PROPOSAL (maximum 500 words)
Please provide a clear and concise statement about what you plan to achieve – personally, professionally and/or academically — during the course of the Sauvé Scholars Program and, if pertinent, how it relates to your past experience and future ambitions.
SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION PACKAGE
The deadline for receiving all completed First Stage applications is:
5PM EST on MONDAY, 30 NOVEMBER 2009

may be sent to the Sauvé Scholars Selection Committee in one of two ways:

The Nominator will receive an automatic acknowledgement of receipt. If you, the Applicant, wish to receive the acknowledgement as well, please arrange with your Nominator to copy you on his/her message submitting the package.
2. The Nominator or the Applicant may send the completed Application package by mail/courier* to:

*If sent by post, the Nomination Form with any supporting documents should be placed in a separate sealed envelope inside the package, with The Nominator’s signature across the seal to preserve confidentiality.
Any Application package that is not received by the Sauvé Scholars Selection Committee by 5PM EST on Monday, 30 November 2009, and that does not include all components listed above will be deemed invalid and will not be considered by the Selection Committee.

THIRD STAGE — THE FINAL SELECTION PROCESS
Selected candidates MIGHT be asked by the Selection Committee to submit the following:
MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
The Medical Certificate is a letter from a physician confirming that you are in good health with specific mention of any and all pre-existing and/or chronic conditions such as allergies, asthma, etc. As Jeanne Sauvé House, where the Scholars live, is a Montreal heritage building, regrettably it is not currently designed to accommodate persons with special needs.
INTERVIEWS
In certain parts of the world, where the Program has associates or collaborators nearby, Candidates may have the opportunity of an in-person meeting. The Selection Committee may also conduct telephone interviews with some or all of the Candidates at this stage.
PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH
For those whose mother tongue is not English, there may be a requirement to take a test through the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) www.ielts.org. The test is given every year in 120 countries and measures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills — listening, reading, writing and speaking.
NOTIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES
By 1 May 2010, successful candidates will receive an Offer Letter that includes the Terms and Conditions of the Award (See How the Program Works). Please note that no deferral of the Award to a subsequent year is permitted. Candidates who wish to re-apply to the Program at a later date may do so one more time only, provided they are still within the age limit.
Successful Candidates must be in possession of a valid passport with expiry date of no less than six months after the end of the Award period (i.e. November 2011 or later), and are required to forward a photocopy of their main passport page showing the expiry date with their acceptance of the Offer.
At the time of their acceptance of the Offer, all non-Canadian citizens or permanent residents are required to formally agree to leave Canada at the end of the Program.
Immediately upon receipt of each Candidate’s acceptance, arrangements for required visas and travel will be made by the Foundation.
Each new Scholar (no longer are you a Candidate!) will be requested to submit a photo and brief profile (biographical notes) for circulation among their fellow Scholars and for posting on the Website.
COMMENCEMENT OF THE PROGRAM
Scholars must arrive in Montreal before the third week of August 2010 in order to fully participate in all orientation activities prior to the commencement of the academic year. You will be advised of the opening date of the Program and are encouraged to arrive several days earlier in order to acclimatize and explore your new surroundings.
