The Application Process / How to Apply

The period to submit an application to the 2010-2011 Sauvé Scholars Program has now ended.  All Applicants who have been shortlisted (qualified for Stage 2) have been notified

SECOND STAGE — THE SELECTION PROCESS

In the second stage of the process, Candidates who have been short listed will submit the following documents in support of their candidacy:

  • Three Letters of Recommendation (You may also ask your Nominator to submit a Letter of Recommendation)
  • Official Academic Transcript(s)
  • Examples of Leadership
  • Published Works

As you will have less than one month to assemble and submit the required documentation, you are advised to make preliminary plans to obtain all necessary documents, and to secure agreement of the individuals who will write your Letters of Recommendation.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

Three Letters of Recommendation are required:

  • A professional reference from someone (e.g. your most recent or current employer) who has direct knowledge of your work — whether paid, as an intern, or as a volunteer
  • An academic reference from someone who can evaluate your academic performance and credentials, and has personally supervised some aspect of your studies
  • A personal reference from someone not related to you who can attest to your good character and personal qualities.

The Letters of Recommendation must be sent directly from the writer to the Selection Committee either by (a) e-mail to apply@sauvescholars.org as a scanned document including signature (.pdf); (b) fax to +1 514-844-1788 or; (c) by post/courier in a sealed envelope (with the recommender’s signature across the seal to preserve confidentiality).

ACADEMIC TRANSCIPTS

Official transcripts for all college or university level studies that you have completed, or will have completed before the end of June 2010, should be sent directly by the institution to:

Sauvé Scholars Program Selection Committee
Fondation Sauvé
1514 avenue Docteur-Penfield

Confirmation of a Candidate’s demonstrated leadership ability should be provided through third parties, for example: media reports, commentaries, testimonials, public and/or professional recognition, etc.

PUBLISHED WORKS

Candidates are encouraged to submit copies (not originals) of representative written, photographic, audio, film, video or other graphic examples of works that have been published. Authorship, whether sole or in collaboration with others, should be clearly identified, together with a description of the publication vehicle, its audience and any critiques received. No materials will be returned. Please ensure sufficient protective wrapping and postage for tapes, cassettes, CDs, DVDs and other sensitive materials. THIRD STAGE — THE FINAL SELECTION PROCESS

Selected candidates MIGHT be asked by the Selection Committee to submit

MEDICAL CERTIFICATE

The Medical Certificate is a letter from a physician confirming that you are in good health with specific mention of any and all pre-existing and/or chronic conditions such as allergies, asthma, etc. As Jeanne Sauvé House, where the Scholars live, is a Montreal heritage building, regrettably it is not currently designed to accommodate persons with special needs.

INTERVIEWS

In certain parts of the world, where the Program has associates or collaborators nearby, Candidates may have the opportunity of an in-person meeting. The Selection Committee may also conduct telephone interviews with some or all of the Candidates at this stage.

PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH

For those whose mother tongue is not English, there may be a requirement to take a test through the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) www.ielts.org. The test is given every year in 120 countries and measures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills — listening, reading, writing and speaking.

NOTIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES

By 1 May 2010, successful candidates will receive an Offer Letter that includes the Terms and Conditions of the Award (See How the Program Works). Please note that no deferral of the Award to a subsequent year is permitted. Candidates who wish to re-apply to the Program at a later date may do so one more time only, provided they are still within the age limit.

Successful Candidates must be in possession of a valid passport with expiry date of no less than six months after the end of the Award period (i.e. November 2011 or later), and are required to forward a photocopy of their main passport page showing the expiry date with their acceptance of the Offer.

At the time of their acceptance of the Offer, all non-Canadian citizens or permanent residents are required to formally agree to leave Canada at the end of the Program.

Immediately upon receipt of each Candidate’s acceptance, arrangements for required visas and travel will be made by the Foundation.

Each new Scholar (no longer are you a Candidate!) will be requested to submit a photo and brief profile (biographical notes) for circulation among their fellow Scholars and for posting on the Website.

COMMENCEMENT OF THE PROGRAM

Scholars must arrive in Montreal before the third week of August 2010 in order to fully participate in all orientation activities prior to the commencement of the academic year. You will be advised of the opening date of the Program and are encouraged to arrive several days earlier in order to acclimatize and explore your new surroundings.

“Leaders must dream of changing the world.

They must have an inspired vision of the changes they want to make and be prepared to consecrate all
their energy to that purpose. A capacity to communicate their objectives is indispensable to sustain
the enthusiasm of their collaborators and their perseverance in action.”
— The Right Honourable Jeanne Sauvé, Opening Speech to the National Conference for Young Leaders, June 2-8, 1991
