Temitope Folaranmi

Temitope is a medical doctor and recently completed his internship at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Ile-Ife, Nigeria. His interest is in public healthcare policy and his passions are for young people’s health and development. His research entrepreneurship has earned him a host of academic and conference scholarships.

From his early school years, Temitope has followed his interest in public health, particularly in healthcare systems and improved healthcare delivery in resource poor communities.  This focus has not only guided his successful completion of his studies and medical qualifications - he was President and Valedictorian of the 2009 Class of the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical School - but also his participation in a number of related initiatives. Notably, he coordinated the Campus Health and Rights Initiative, an NGO whose mission is the promotion of the reproductive health of young people. During his internship, Temitope volunteered for the Clinton Foundation-funded Paediatric HIV Outreach program of the hospital.

Temitope has been involved in various policy forums that address young people's health. He recently served as a technical resource person for the National Consultative Forum on Advancing Young People's Health and Development in Nigeria. His outstanding research in public health was recognized by the International Conference on Global Health in Washington D.C. in 2008, where he was a recipient of the New Investigator Award.

Temitope’s major influence in life has been his parents, who inculcated in him strict discipline, an appreciation of hard work and self-sacrifice as the qualities that produce successful leaders.

As a Sauvé Scholar, Temitope intends to carry out a critical analysis of sexual and reproductive health services on Canadian university campuses and to evaluate the degree to which they meet the needs of students, using McGill University as a case study. Based on his findings, he will design an adaptive model for promoting sexual and reproductive health on university campuses in Nigeria.

Temitope speaks English and Yoruba fluently. He loves football, photography and travelling.

“Leaders must dream of changing the world.

They must have an inspired vision of the changes they want to make and be prepared to consecrate all
their energy to that purpose. A capacity to communicate their objectives is indispensable to sustain
the enthusiasm of their collaborators and their perseverance in action.”
— The Right Honourable Jeanne Sauvé, Opening Speech to the National Conference for Young Leaders, June 2-8, 1991
