Pyone Kyaw

Pyone Kyaw has excelled as a civil society leader dedicated to improving quality of life and empowering young women in Myanmar.  Pyone has pursued studies in education and English, and served as a teacher for marginalized students in a small village.  Before joining the Sauvé Scholars Program, Pyone established a youth forum that has become a driving force to strengthen civil society in Myanmar, and worked as a communication officer with the Shalom Foundation, a local NGO focusing on peacebuilding, conflict resolution and development.  In 2008, Pyone applied communications and leadership skills to assist victims of Cyclone Nargis, facilitating the delivery of psycho-social support services to women and children.  Pyone also participated in a year-long professional exchange program in the Philippines, supported by the Fredskorpset of Norway in partnership with five Asian and African civil society organizations.  In the Philippines, Pyone carried out several community research projects on sustainable development and indigenous peoples, and explored the issue of “Peace Communication” in the Mindanao region. Pyone is a member of the Philippines chapter of the International Association of Women in Radio and Television.

Pyone has returned to Burma to work with Shalom Foundation; on her way she passed through Thailand where she hoped to meet Sauvé Alumnus (2005-2006), Jamlong Saiyot.

REPORT  >  My Life as a Sauvé Scholar

“Leaders must dream of changing the world.

They must have an inspired vision of the changes they want to make and be prepared to consecrate all
their energy to that purpose. A capacity to communicate their objectives is indispensable to sustain
the enthusiasm of their collaborators and their perseverance in action.”
— The Right Honourable Jeanne Sauvé, Opening Speech to the National Conference for Young Leaders, June 2-8, 1991
