WordPlay: A One Day Symposium on Literacy and Arts Education in Special Education

-

On 21 April, 2012, Simangele Mabena organized and delivered WordPlay, the Sauvé Foundation’s first ever “each one teach one”.

The symposium was attended by professionals and researchers working at the intersection of literacy education, arts education and special education. Simangele invited each participant to teach one concept or activity to the others.

Much of what they shared is summarized in the WordPlay zine that she produced- a useful reminder for participants and a tool for others working in these fields.

The day sparked new ideas as well as new partnerships, and also introduced its participants to an original, interactive approach to professional exchange.

“Leaders must dream of changing the world.

They must have an inspired vision of the changes they want to make and be prepared to consecrate all
their energy to that purpose. A capacity to communicate their objectives is indispensable to sustain
the enthusiasm of their collaborators and their perseverance in action.”
— The Right Honourable Jeanne Sauvé, Opening Speech to the National Conference for Young Leaders, June 2-8, 1991
